A New Direction

Helping people along the journey since 1988.

Compassion. Caring. Client-focused. These are the values we subscribe to. We strive to meet the client or couple where they are. We listen. We understand. Our mission is to hold up the lantern so that our clients can see their path.

Achievements

Dr. Capps is a Past President of the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals (TAAP) and is an honoree in the TAAP Hall of Fame. Mr. Ramirez earned the Field Work Award from Our Lady of the Lake University and holds the Community Service Award from Palmer Drug Abuse Program.

Who are we?

Frederick Capps, Ph.D. founded A NEW DIRECTION in 1988. During his career, he has counseled thousands of individuals and couples and educated thousands of new counselors as a professor in collegiate counseling programs. Combining the wisdom gained from a lengthy career in counseling and his certification as an EMDR clinician, he developed the EXACT Method, an innovative approach to couples’ therapy.

José Ramirez, LMSW has worked in the addiction treatment field since 2003 after graduating from Texas Tech University where he studied in the nationally recognized Center for the Study of Addiction. He continued to hone his counseling skills while earning a master’s degree in social work at Our Lady of the Lake University in 2015. He joined A NEW DIRECTION in April of 2020. The timing was perfect as José and Dr. Fred combined their talents and experience to continue to offer face-to-face (although masked) counseling in a safe environment during the pandemic. José brings a wealth of talent, experience, and resources to the practice.

Services

Counseling

We focus on empowering adults, adolescents, and families to find their inner strengths which will promote lifelong healing. We achieve this by providing a neutral safe space, listening to the client’s concerns, and customizing a treatment plan designed to produce rapid results.

Grief and Trauma Resolution

We use many therapeutic “tools,” including EMDR, Brainspotting, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). As in any craft, using the right tool for the job produces the best result. Clients can expect compassionate, effective counseling. Many cases resolve in only one or two sessions.

USDOT SAP Evaluations

Both Dr. Fred and José are Qualified Substance Abuse Professionals (SAP) committed to the mandate of protecting public safety by returning safe employees to the workplace following a thorough evaluation and appropriate treatment. Employees can expect timely service at a reasonable cost. Employers can expect employees who are unlikely to have subsequent violations. The public can expect reliable safe work from employees in safety-sensitive positions.
